Council of Analytical Tribal Studies (COATS) is situated at Koraput, the headquarters of Koraput district, Odisha which is in the heart of the Central Tribal Belt of the country.

The district is a part of KBK (Koraput, Bolangir, Kalahandi) region and houses more or less all the 62 tribal communities found in the state. COATS is a registered body registered under the Societies Registration Act of 1860 bearing No. 712/82 of 1991-92. It is a premier Research Cum Academic institute in the field of Tribal Studies affiliated to Berhampur University. The institute was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha Late Biju Patnaik on 9th January, 1993. It has completed 25 years of its valuable service on 8th January, 2018.
